You brought jewels for me
craddled in the fallen leaves
lit with morning sun

I wish I could be
as nonchalant as you are.
When will winter end?

Can you see through me?
A whisper of memory
all that remains here.

~

Chills run down my spine
even with the sun shining
Winter hasn’t thawed.

~

I don’t mind being
in the same place, the same time
I’m invisible

Wind howls outside
A memory of you returns
Warming my winter

Wind howls outside
I feel winter separate
what is from what was

~

The forecast is bleak
we will not see the spring soon
…enough with winter.

~

I lay awake now
wonder what’s keeping you warm
Is it memory?

No words interrupt
the winter’s chilly silence
or that between us

Three Haiku for a Winter Cold

Except for hot tea
and toast; her winter meal is
imaginary

~

Eyes burn and throat-sore,
she stumbles, falls to the couch –
a winter coma.

~

The room spins briefly
before everything goes dark;
enter winter cold.
