Winter Beginnings

Morning drips from winter grey trees.
Icicles form, capture the pace of life
in this chilled wind. Squirrels huddle
against the dry side, chatter in
companion sound to the rustle of leaves
clinging to near-bare branches.

Pre-rain mist fogs the air, solidifies
our breath as we keep tempo with one another;
each stride carries us farther away
from where we were; destination unknown.

Today it doesn’t matter where we’re going –
winter will wrap around us, close off
the world beyond this place. And we will
welcome winter’s beginning at our own pace.
