Step Carefully

She tip-toes along

the top rail

perched precariously between

the rock and a hard place

unable to reach out and touch either side

with more than finger-tips

She wonders which will fail

first – the rail?

or her steady step?

Brave enough to look down

she continues to look up

forward into the future

It hasn’t been easy

this ascent, never intended,

has taken its toll

The balanced beam tilts

sways in the ever-changing wind

Sooner, perhaps, rather than later

she will descend

step carefully off

whether of her own free will

or an ungracious shove

remains in question
